AdSense Click Through Rate or CTR is calculated by dividing the number of ad clicks by the number of page views, then multiplying by 100%.

CTR = Clicks / Page views x 100%

If your AdSense CTR is 30%, it means you get 30 clicks out of 100 page views. However, if your AdSense CTR is less than 1%, it means you hardly get a click out of 100 page views. In other words, visitors to your website or blog seldom or do not feel like clicking on your AdSense ads. If you want to make money with Google AdSense, then you should do something to increase your AdSense CTR. Remember, your goal is to make your visitors click on your AdSense ads without violating the AdSense TOS.

1. Place Your AdSense Ads Strategically

Placement of your AdSense ads is the most important aspect in increasing your AdSense CTR. The diagram on the left known as AdSense heat map, illustrates the ideal placements of AdSense ads on your website or blog. The colours fade from dark orange (strongest performance) to light yellow (weakest performance).

Place Your AdSense Ads Above the Fold

AdSense ads placed above the fold tend to perform better than those below the fold. Why? Simply because your visitors spend most of their time above the fold - this is the place where they absorb as much information as possible before they start scrolling down. Let us face it, most visitors will not even bother scrolling, they will just glance then click away.

Place Your AdSense Ads Below Post Title

Placing your AdSense ads below post title is the best way to increase your AdSense CTR. Try to place an AdSense ad below post title and another one at the end of the post. By doing so, your AdSense ads will not be in your visitors' blind spots anymore.

2. Improve the Look and Feel of Your AdSense Ads

Improving the look and feel of your AdSense ads will help you to increase your AdSense CTR. The trick is do not make your AdSense ads look like ads, because visitors to your website or blog are looking for your good contents and not for your AdSense ads. Here are the ways:

Use High Performing AdSense Ad Formats

Some AdSense ad formats perform better than others - some are making you more money than others. For me, the best performing AdSense ad formats are 728 x 90 Leaderboard, 300 x 250 Medium Rectangular and 160 x 600 Wide Skyscraper. If you are using 468 x 60 Banner, upgrade it to 728 x 90 Leaderboard. For 250 x 250 Square, substitute it with 300 x 250 Medium Rectangular, and try using 160 x 600 Wide Skyscraper instead of 120 x 600 Skyscraper. All these changes will help increasing your AdSense CTR.

Customise Your AdSense Ads - Borders, Colours and Fonts

Make your AdSense ad borders disappear by matching them with the background colour of your website or blog, because they look and feel more inviting this way. For your AdSense ad colours and fonts, blend them with the colours and fonts that already exist on your website or blog. Since these AdSense ads look like a part of your post content, they have higher chances of being clicked by your visitors, resulting in higher AdSense CTR.

3. Use Theme Designed for AdSense Ads

Another way to increase your AdSense CTR is to use theme or template which is specially designed to support AdSense ads. This type of theme of template usually comes with sidebars for 300 x 250 Medium Rectangular or 160 x 600 Wide Skyscraper, built in AdSense ad zones for 300 x 250 Medium Rectangulars in the post area, AdSense ads randomisation to combat AdSense ads blindness and much much more, to generate more clicks for your website or blog, therefore increasing your AdSense CTR. Here is an AdSense theme which I recommend:
